Volume in the lower cheeks caused by excess tissue in the buccal fat pads can create the appearance of an overly plump, round, or square-shaped face. Buccal fat is typically resistant to weight changes, and the full facial contours it creates are often perceived as a cosmetic concern by many men and women.

For individuals affected by disproportionate buccal fat, facial plastic surgeon Dr. Matthew White, MD can surgically reduce and reshape the buccal fat pads to produce a leaner, more sculpted appearance. This procedure can create a V-shaped lower facial contour that more closely adheres to ideal male and female facial aesthetics.

Benefits of Buccal Fat Reduction

Cheek reduction through the removal of buccal fat offers several cosmetic benefits, which include:

  • Reduction of cheek volume
  • Adjustment of facial shape
  • Creation of a more slender, narrower facial contour
  • Reduction of facial plumpness
  • Enhancement of cheekbones
  • For men: more chiseled jawline and cheeks
  • For women: more delicately sculpted lower facial contour
  • Improvement in the overall balance of facial proportions contour

During your consultation with Dr. White, he will perform a thorough facial examination to determine whether you are a good candidate for the procedure. If Dr. White suggests buccal fat reduction as an effective option for achieving your goals, he will discuss the potential results you can expect from the procedure.

Buccal Fat Reduction Procedure

The cheek reduction procedure is accomplished with small incisions placed inside the mouth between the cheeks and gums. Through these incisions, Dr. White is able to access the buccal fat pads and remove the appropriate amount of fat to resculpt the appearance of the cheeks.

Once one side is complete, Dr. White repeats the process with the other cheek, careful to maintain even, balanced results. Depending on the extent of the procedure, surgery may be performed under either general or local anesthesia. In some cases, cheek reduction may be combined with other procedures, such as neck lift and liposuction or chin augmentation, to achieve more comprehensive facial recontouring.

Results of Buccal Fat Reduction

Recovery after buccal fat reduction is relatively swift for most patients. Incisions in the mouth tend to heal quickly, and any swelling in the cheeks often dissipates completely within two weeks or less. There is very little downtime following the procedure, and patients often feel well enough to go about their normal activities within a day of surgery. The results of this small treatment can be remarkable, often bringing about a significant improvement in the patient’s overall facial shape and contours of the lower face.
