Medical Benefits of BOTOX® Injections

In addition to its cosmetic enhancement potential, BOTOX® injections can also act as a medical treatment. The treatment can be used to aid in the relief of migraines, as well as for excessive sweating in the underarms and palms (hyperhidrosis). BOTOX® injections can be very successful in making patients look and feel like new again.

Candidates for BOTOX® Cosmetic

Both men and women can benefit from BOTOX® injections. Typically, if you are in good health and wish to improve the effects aging and the environment have had on your skin, you may be considered a good candidate for BOTOX® Cosmetic. However, it is important to have realistic goals and expectations with injectable treatments, as results vary among patients.

Depending on your desired results, Dr. White may recommend other filler treatments, such as Restylane®, Juvéderm™ or Radiesse®, if he feels they may be more advantageous for your specific goals.

The BOTOX® Cosmetic Procedure

Dr. White performs the procedure by injecting small amounts of a highly purified form of botulinum toxin type A into the areas targeted for treatment. This special formula temporarily relaxes the underlying muscles by preventing them from contracting. As a result, lines and wrinkles become smoother, and the skin looks more refreshed and vibrant. The procedure can take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour to complete, depending on the extent of treatment and the number of areas being targeted. Dr. White can utilize a topical numbing agent in the injection areas to minimize discomfort. Patients can typically resume their normal activities right away, often making it the ideal “lunch hour” treatment. While you will likely experience some degree of numbness, swelling or bruising in the injection areas, this should fade within a few days. Results from BOTOX® Cosmetic usually last about four months, and can be maintained with occasional follow-up treatment.

Local anesthetic and cold compresses can diminish any potential discomfort you may experience during your BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment. Most of our patients report having a good experience in our office and do not describe any significant pain during the process.

How long does treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic take?

The exact duration of your BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment will depend upon how many areas you are having treated as well as the extent of your specific aesthetic concerns. Typically, sessions take around 30 minutes.

Will I see the results of BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment right away?

The full results of your BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment are usually visible approximately one to two weeks after your session.

Any side effects from treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic should be very minimal. Mild bruising and swelling at the injection sites can occur, but these symptoms should fade quickly. Patients typically return to work or regular activities immediately after treatment. Very rare side effects may include flu-like symptoms or mild nausea.
