What Is a Deep Plane Facelift?
The deep plane facelift is a surgical technique that lifts and repositions the deeper structural layers of the face rather than addressing the skin alone. In most facelift approaches, the surgeon works at the level of the SMAS, a fibromuscular layer beneath the subcutaneous tissue. The deep plane technique goes further, releasing the retaining ligaments beneath the SMAS and adjusting the tissue below as a single, cohesive unit. This allows the soft tissues of the cheeks, jowls, and lower face to be repositioned to mirror the face's natural anatomy. Because this approach moves the deeper structures together rather than in isolation, the results tend to look more integrated and last considerably longer than those produced by more superficial techniques. It is widely regarded as the most comprehensive surgical approach to moderate and severe facial aging.
